**Toluca Thrashes América to Win the Campeón de Campeones Title in Mexican Football**
July 20 (Reuters) - Toluca claimed the champion of champions trophy on Sunday after coming from behind to beat América 3-1 in the match between the last two Mexican soccer champions.
The "Red Devils" of Toluca were champions of the Clausura tournament in May, while the "Eagles" of América won the Apertura tournament in December 2024.
"Very happy. Thanks to the players for the game they played, for not giving up. Beating América always gives us more courage. We were going for it all and we are deserved winners. We are making important strides," said Toluca's manager, Argentine Antonio Mohamed, at a press conference.
In the match played at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, América took the lead in the first minute through Alejandro Zendejas, who finished off a cross from Uruguayan Brian Rodríguez from the left wing.
Toluca tied the game in the 12th minute with a shot from outside the box by Argentine Franco Romero following a defensive rebound.
Mohamed's team turned the score around at the end of the first half when Uruguayan Bruno Méndez headed home a corner kick from the right wing by Alexis Vega.
Portuguese forward Paulinho scored Toluca's third goal in the 72nd minute when he finished with his left foot inside the box after receiving a pass from Argentine Nicolás Castro.
América finished the match with one less man due to the expulsion of Chilean defender Igor Lichnovsky, who received a red card in the 89th minute for committing a heavy foul on Brazilian Helinho.
"The club works very well, we have a very good team. The most important numbers are the tournaments we win; history is about the teams that win," Paulinho told TUDN.
